20th Century Encounters

1909 – Sarasota FL's First Official Golf Course

1931 – Sarasota FL – MahiMingo Bounty for Circus

1909 – Sarasota FL's First Official Golf Course

To celebrate his wife’s birthday, Robert Gustoven took his wife golfing at John Gelespie’s homestead golf course. He had a nice drive and landed it on the green. His wife drove and it fell short, landing in sand trap. When they arrived at the bunker where the shot had landed, a strange pink, blue and green bird fish was standing over her ball. It bent down, picked it up with its beak and strolled over onto the green and dropped it in the hole. The MahiMingo winked, laughed and then flew off towards the ocean and into the sunset. The couple agreed that this was the most unbelievable birthday hole in-one ever possible, picked up the ball and a perfect pink feather that was left behind and continued to enjoy celebrating of her birthday.

Inmates sentenced to spend the night in the open-air jail often reported being visited by strange pink, blue and green bird fish creatures. These creatures would let out low laughing calls as they watched the mosquitoes feast all night on the inmates as part of their sobering punishment for the rowdy drunks. It is said that occasionally the MahiMingos would drop in oranges and other fresh, local fruit to aide in recovery. The prisoner reports were dismissed as drunken hallucinations but the orange peels found in the cells in the mornings could never be explained.

Local trappers reportedly had a secret open bounty for the capture of the mystical pink, blue and green flying fish creature. It was supposedly offered by Sarasota winter residence John and Charles Ringling, for a special addition to their circus.  They thought having this mystical creature, if it existed, as part of their show would bring world wide attention to their circus.  There are no reports of any capture or claiming of the bounty.

2 construction workers who were excavating the early canals of Cape Coral reported seeing 3 pink, blue and green bird fish creatures.  These creatures reportedly stole their lunch out of their lunch boxes that had been left in the shade under some trees. The 2 workers reported this to their supervisor and were immediately suspended for suspicion of drinking on the job.

The Ft Meyers police reported, off the record, that a man staying at the Rancho del Mar Hotel was found naked standing on the beach staring out to sea. When questioned he said that 2 pink, blue and green bird things came out of the water and stole his bathing suit while he was skinny dipping. He gave chase but the creatures flew off and dropped his shorts on the roof of the hotel. The man wasn’t sure how to get back to his room as he had no other clothes. The police gave him a towel, asked to him lay of the alcohol and go back to his room. No charges were filed.

A barge operator working on the construction of the Jolly Bridge reported having his cigar taken right from his mouth by a large pink, blue and green flying fish that left him soaking wet with a pink feather stuck to his shirt. His coworkers refused to support his claim saying he was suffering from heat stroke but had no explanation for the pink feather.
